The trial got under way on a cool Wednesday morning in September. Thomas Jordan and the other defendants were whisked into the heavily guarded courtroom and seated in the order of the indictments. They listened as Attorney Hale took the floor and discredited the testimony of each of the Internal Affairs agents that worked the case. Mr. Jordan sat comfortably at the defendants’ table on the third day of the proceedings, confident that the half million in attorney’s fees would be persuasive enough to sway the jurors’ decision. The smirk on his face was soon wiped away as the reliable informant was led in by several deputy Marshalls, hands tightly gripping the firearms at their sides. Startled by the sight of the snitch, the overly confident man leaned over and whispered in Leon’s ear.

“What’s going on? I thought that rat was going to be taken care of before trial?

“I apologize, but from my understanding, he was supposed to be taken care of a couple weeks ago. He was definitely not supposed to be available for testimony.” Leon whispered back to his client.

“Is there any way to get the case postponed for a few weeks until I can get this?

Situation handled my mutha fuckin’ self?”

“It’s already gone past the time limit we had to get things in order. The judge is an asshole. He won’t favor anything we come up with to buy more time unless it’s about money, but I’ll definitely give it a shot.”

“Do it. That’s what I’m paying you for.”

Leon stood and asked the Judge for permission to approach the bench.

“Your honor, I’d like to ask for a continuance of this case.”

“Counselor, can you please explain the reasoning behind your wanting to drag this case out when it’s already been two and a half years since the defendants were indicted?” The judge responded.

“I want things to at least look good in the eyes of the defendants spending the money, Bob. I may be able to pull another hundred thousand or so out of the head agent if we can continue it for a few more weeks.” Leon whispered back.

“Okay, but remember, you have agreed to give the prosecution this one.”

“I know, and thank you again for talking the prosecutor into accepting that small “donation” on the Barnes case.”

“No problem. Anything for you babe.”

Leon turned and strolled over to his seat beside Mr. Jordan.

The judge slammed the gavel down and made his announcement. “This court has been made aware that the defendant’s legal representation is not adequately prepared to proceed at this time. Therefore, it’s my decision to reschedule the proceedings until Oct 23rd at eight o’clock A.M. this court is adjourned."

Leon shook his client’s hand, straightened his custom-made jacket, and exited the courtroom, winking at the wife of one of the defendants.
